All the time God is Good

Preacher: Chibuzo Petty Scripture: Psalm 22 Please close your eyes. As you hear these words, imagine the scene that accompanies them. “Oh my God, my God. Why have you forsaken me? Elahi, Elahi, lama sabachthani. My God, my God. Why have you forsaken me?” You can open your eyes. As a Christian, when I hear…

Go Deeper Than What you See: Un-Ask

Preacher: Julia Baker Swann Scritpures: Luke 13: 1-9 & Isaiah 55:1-9 The poet Joy Harjo said, “A poem can hold our questions, hold our contradictions.” I think one of the reasons I am a poet is because I love to ask questions.  But what I have found freeing about the way a poem asks questions…

by their fruits

Preacher: Jessie Houff Scripture: Genesis 3: 1-7 & Matthew 7: 15-20 This week on Tuesday was International Women’s Day. I was so busy, I didn’t realize this until the day was almost over. Funnily enough, the Women in Ministry group met for our monthly check-in and support call. To share space with so many amazing…

Into the Wild Within

Preacher: Randall Westfall Scripture: Synthesis of Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12-13; Luke 4:1-13 (Hart, NASB, NET) By day four the hunger pangs subsided. And in their place another kind of hunger emerged.  I’d been in this secluded Pacific northwest wilderness for half a week with nothing but the clothes on my back and the knowledge and…

Now I Know

Preacher: Chris Bowman Scripture: 1 Kings 17 The last two years have been something for the history books. Inflation, insurrection, plagues of locusts, global pandemic, now a war in Europe. How is it that people of faith are to survive such a time as this? Sometimes it’s hard to know. It’s hard to imagine surviving…

Bright, Shining Wonder

Preacher: Jennifer Hosler Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 For those of us in the northern hemisphere, December is marked by short days and long nights. It is an adjustment for everyone, that first troubling transition out of daylight savings time when it just seems so very dark, so very early. I find those first few weeks quite…

Shines Forth (Enthroned Upon the Cherubim)

Preacher: Nathan Hosler Scriptures: Micah 5: 2-5a, Psalm 80: 1-7, & Luke 1: 39-55 “In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled…

Makes me Feel Some Kinda Way

Preacher: Jessie Houff Scriptures: Zephaniah 3: 14-20 & Luke 3:7-18 A little bit more frost on the grass each morning. Breathtaking, fiery red leaves cascade to the ground with every steady breeze. Winter is near.  Winter is the death that makes way for a new spring. A necessary death. A beautiful one. Sounds like Jesus. …

The Trouble with Christmas

Preacher: Chris Bowman Scriptures: Luke 1:68-79 & Luke 3:1-6 It is an honor to preach here at Washington City Church of the Brethren. Awaiting the Mysterious

Pastor: Nathan Hosler Scriptures: Jeremiah 33:14-16 & Luke 21:25-36 This weekend we marked the life of my Grandpa Shenk. On Saturday, I, with my cousins and siblings, carried his coffin to the grave on a hill overlooking Lancaster County farmland and not a mile from where he lived much of his 86 years. Earl Eugene…

Do as the Dandelions Do

Preacher: Anna Lisa Gross Scripture: John 12: 23-28 On lazy summer days we made dandelion crowns for each other, threading one end of a stem into the other. We made chains from dandelion stems, once from our front door, across the porch, across the yard, all the way to the neighbors’ front door. We picked…

Jesus Comes Out

Preacher: Anonymous Scripture:  John 2:1-11 Coming out is hard.  I can only speak from my own experience, but I am willing to bet most people would agree.  Being vulnerable with others about who you truly are is a nerve-wracking experience, even if you are pretty sure how they will react.  There is always the what…

With Us in Our Suffering

Preacher: Jennifer Hosler Scriptures (Psalm 22:1-15; Hebrews 4:12-16)             Take a moment and imagine with me. Imagine that someone visits your church for the first time. You are chatting with them after worship, getting to know them a little, and they share with you that they struggle with a serious anxiety disorder. You say, “Thank…

A Harvest of Ground Cherries and Righteousness

Preacher: Nathan Hosler Scripture: Mark 8:27-38 & James 3 Mark 8:27-388:27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 8:28 And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the…

Clouds

Preacher: Jeff Davidson Scripture: Hebrews 12:1 When I think about clouds, there are at least three different things that I think of. The first is the old Judy Collins song “Both Sides, Now.” It’s actually a Joni Mitchell song. Mitchell wrote it, but Judy Collins had the first hit with it in 1968. The first…

Religion on the Outside and the Inside

Preacher: Jeff Davidson Scriptures: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 & James 1:17-27 What are some traditions that we have, either as individuals, or as families, or as a congregation? There are often family traditions associated with different holidays. When I was a kid we always had Thanksgiving at my grandparents’ house, Christmas Eve at my aunt and…

Words of Life

Preacher: Nathan Hosler Scriptures: Ephesians 6:10-20 & John 6:56-69 “As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace.” If you were here last week, you may have noticed our child’s shiny rubber boots. These newly purchased boots are yellow with rainbow stripes. They replaced boots that…

The God of More

Preacher: Jessie Houff Scriptures: Ephesians 5:15-20 and John 6:51-58 We continue our unplanned Bread series this week with yet another scripture on eating and drinking the symbolic body and blood of Jesus. These last few weeks we’ve reflected on the miracle of feeding the 5,000, Jesus walking on water and guiding his disciples to safety,…

Life Bread—Bread of life

Preacher: Nathan Hosler Scriptures: 1 Kings 19:4-8, John 6:35, 41-51, & Ephesians 4:25-5:2 Sometime in the middle of the week we would bike, walk, or drive about a kilometer down a dusty road through farm fields and past mango trees from Kulp Bible College to Church of the Brethren (EYN) Headquarters and the ZME (Women’s…

The Right Questions

Preacher: Jeff Davidson Scripture: Psalm 78: 23-29 and John 6: 24-35 Jessie preached last week on the miracle of the loaves and fishes. One of my favorite British comedians and writers is a guy named David Mitchell. Mitchell once talked about the miracle of the loaves and fishes, and pointed out that out of 5,000 people…

    Hi WCCOB
Is there a link that I could listen to Pastor Chibuzo’s sermon on May 22. I was not able to attend via zoom

    1. Hello Madonna, it all depends on staff capacity, whether the service was recorded (sometimes there are errors), and whether preachers provide a textual sermon. Sorry that that is not a precise answer but if we have it, it will be posted eventually.
